Writing Contests

Need some extra cash then you can enter an some essay contests at the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Ladies Auxiliary Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen contests.  The Voice of Democracy contest requires an audio essay, with the theme. This contest is open to students grades 9 through 12, under age 19.
The other contest, appropriately named Patriot’s Pen, consists of a written essay.

The winners at the local level become eligible to move on to district, then state, and then a national level that could result in the capture of thousands of dollars in scholarship money.

The theme for the 300- to 400-word typed essay is “Why America’s Veterans Should Be Honored.”
Contestants for Patriot’s Pen should be in sixth, seventh or eighth grade.

Winners of the local competition will then be judged at a district level, then at state level.

State Voice of Democracy winners receive an all-expenses paid four-day trip to Washington D.C. in March.
Their entries will compete at the national level for U.S. Savings Bonds and scholarships.
The National Voice of Democracy top prize is a $30,000 scholarship.
The Patriot’s Pen top prize is a $10,000 savings bond.
Local and post winners will also receive awards from the Florida VFW.
